Employment Terms

1. EVALUATION: an act or instance of evaluating or appraising.
2. ASSESSMENT: the act of assessing; appraisal; evaluation.
3. BACKGROUND CHECK: used by employers to verify the accuracy of the information you provide on your resume or job application and beyond.
4. BENEFITS: something that promotes or enhances well-being; an advantage.
5. COLD CALL: a visit or telephone call to a prospective customer without an appointment or a previous introduction.
6. COMPENSATION PACKAGE: the combination of salary and fringe benefits an employer provides to an employee
7. GROSS PAY: total of an employee's regular renumeration including allowances, overtime pay, commissions, and bonuses, etc., before any deductions are made.
8. FICA: the federal law which requires employers to withhold a portion of employee wages and pay them to the government trust fund which provides retirement benefits.
9. OSHA: the division of the Department of Labor that sets and enforces occupational health and safety rules.
10. NET PAY: the remain amount after deductions of the gross pay.
11. DEDUCTIONS: an amount that is or may be deducted
12. INTERNSHIP: the state or condition of being intern.
13. OUTSOURCING: to obtain goods or services from an outside source
14. NETWORKING: a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest.
15. OCCUPATIONAL OUTLOOK HANDBOOK: discusses the nature of the work and the typical working conditions for persons in each occupation.
16. SALARY: financial compensation an employee receives for performing the job, and part of your compensation package.
17. TELECOMMUTING: is a employment arrangement where the employee works one or more days from a remote location, often an office in the employee's home.
18. TEMPING: working short employment stints with a variety of clients, usually through a temping agency or staffing firm.
19. THANK YOU LETTERS: after every interview, you should send a letter thanking each person who interviewed you.
20. WORK-PLACE VALUES: concepts and ideas that define a job-seeker and influence your satisfaction -- not only with your job, but with your life.

Chapter 13 & 14 vocabulary

1. Tact- the ability to say and do things in a way that will not offend other people.
2. Empathize- to see someone else's point of view and to imagine oneself in his or her situation.
3. Etiquette- good manners; the rules of polite behavior in dealing with other people.
4. Conflict resolution- a problem-solving strategy for settling dispute.
5. Diversity- variety
6. Stereotype- an oversimplified and distorted belief about a person or group without attention to individual differences.
7. Self-directed- responsible for choosing one's own methods for reaching a goal.
8. Cross-functional team- a group of people from two or more departments or areas of expertise who work together toward a common business goal.
9. Functional team- a group of people from one company department or area of expertise who work together toward a common business goal.
10. Team planning- a process that involves setting goals, assigning roles, and communicating regularly.
11. Facilitator- a leader who helps a team work more smoothly by coordinating its tasks.
12. Total quality management (TQM)- a theory of management that carefully coordinates company efforts to achieve customer satisfaction and continuous product improvement; also called "Commitment to Quality."
13. Leadership style- how a person behaves when he or she is in change of other people.
14. Parliamentary procedure- strict rules of order for conducting a meeting.
